The city of Champaign is the tenth-most populous city in Illinois with an estimated population of just over 86,630. Founded in 1855, it is located within Champaign county and Chicago is just 217km away to the north. Dorothy Ann David is the city’s current manager while Deborah Frank Feinen is the current mayor. She entered office in 2015.
Employers in the city that employ the most workers include The University Of Illinois, Champaign Unit 4 School District, Kraft Heinz and Carle Hospital. The university alone employs nearly 14,000 people. Other companies in the city that employ significant numbers are FedEx, Presence Health, Horizon Hobby and Parkland College. The city’s unemployment rate is currently just 3.6% as of March 2018. This is a couple of points below the state average for Illinois which is 4.6%. Consequently, people looking to move to the area are unlikely to have trouble finding employment.
Perhaps one of the greatest things about the city is that there are lots of parks. 60 in total and they span 650+ acres of space. The parks are very popular with residents who want to escape urban sprawl for a few hours and experience the fresh air and perhaps walk their dogs. The 11 trails also help to attract tourists to the area.
Two of the city’s older theaters are The Art Theater Co-op and The Historic Virgin Theater. The former opened in 1913 and the later opened in the 1920s. The Art Theater Co-op has a daily schedule of showings and despite having just one screen, through the years it has screened hundreds of critically acclaimed independent movies and foreign films. When it first opened it was known as Park Theater, but it has since had many different name changes. The Historic Virgin Theater has 1525 seats and its interior is ornate Spanish renaissance inspired. It does not have a daily screening schedule, but several times a month special screenings are scheduled.
For those who love shopping and dining out, the downtown area of the city is sure to provide you with everything you need. It has lots of top-rated restaurants and shopping areas. It’s also easy to park within walking distance of the best locations thanks to a 6-story parking lot on Hill Street. The shopping area is often a big hit with visitors, but there is also lots of residential accommodation there and many stylish condos and apartments for rent.
